The Future is Here with the Chevy Volt

2013 Chevy Volt at Les Stanford ChevroletThe Chevrolet Volt is a five-door hatchback hybrid car that is assembled at the Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly in Detroit, Michigan. It has won several accolades including the 2011 Green Car of the Year, 2011 Motor Trend Car of the Year, and 2009 Green Car Vision Award. The car was also named in Popular Mechanics Top 10 Cars of 2011: Auto Excellence Awards.

The Volt has two modes, battery powered and gasoline powered; when fully charged the 2013 Volt has an electric range of 38 miles before the gasoline mode kicks in. Once that happens the gasoline fuels an internal combustion engine to extend the range of the electric generator.

Because of the Volt’s hybrid technology this gives the 2013 model a combined 98 MPG-e (miles per gallon equivalent) according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA); as of February 2013 the Volt continues to be the most fuel efficient gasoline engine vehicle on the market. And per GM’s OnStar data the majority of drivers go up to 900 miles, which is on average a month and a half, before they have to refuel.

The Volt’s top speed is 100 mph with it’s 0-60 mph time at 9.2 seconds and the 60-0 mph braking distance is 124 ft per road tests. As for safety, the results don’t lie; the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the 2013 Chevrolet Volt a Top Safety Pick and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awarded the vehicle a five-star overall crash safety rating.

The 2013 Chevy Volt Stands Alone

When is a hybrid not a hybrid? When it has a gasoline engine but doesn’t use it to power the wheels.

The 2013 Chevrolet Volt has a 16.5-kwh lithium battery pack and a 149 horsepower, 273 pound-feet of torque electric motor. The high torque of the electric motor means the Volt is more energetic around town than its gas counterpart. It can reach a speed of 100 mph and goes from a standing start to 60 mph in a little under nine seconds.

The Volt will run on electric-only for 25 to 50 miles around town before the batteries run low.  Everyone else has a gas engine which powers the wheels directly or no gas engine at all. The Volt’s 1.4 liter gas engine turns a generator which sends electricity to the motor and can power the Volt for another 380 miles. If you use the car only for trips less than 35 miles and plug it in every night, you’ll never use a drop of gas. Equivalent miles per gallon while running on electricity are around 130 mpg in the city and 100 mpg on the highway (another oddity of electric motors – they perform best in stop and go driving).

The rest of the Volt makes driving enjoyable. Chevy provides the common list of standard equipment; automatic headlights, keyless entry, automatic climate control and Bluetooth capabilities. The Premium package adds leather upholstery, leather wrapped steering wheel and heated front seats. You can get a rearview camera and parking sensors and a navigation system and Bose speaker upgrade.
