The 2012 Camaro: Celebrating 45 Years of Tire-Shredding Performance

Nothing stays the same, but even after its first appearance 45 years ago, the Chevy Camaro still delivers on speed, performance and appearance. The 2012 Chevy Camaro comes in three V6 (LS Coupe, LT Coupe/Convertible) and three V8 (SS Coupe/Convertible,  ZL 1) models. All 2012 Camaros come standard with front-seat side airbags, anti-lock disc brakes, full-length side curtain airbags, stability control, OnStar service and rear spoilers.

Drivers will enjoy the new ergonomic steering wheels and soft-touch dash inserts. The 2012 Camaros also feature dark taillight lenses with chrome trim, auxiliary gauges and square gauge hoods for a retro feel. Especially notable are the 2012 ZL1 and SS designs.

As one of the fastest Camaros ever with a 6.2 liter V8 akin to the Corvette ZR1, the 2012 Camaro ZL1 puts out 580 horsepower and suits acceleration addicts to a tee. The ZL1 also has other upgrades that enhance its overall performance and appeal. These include 20-inch performance tires, adaptive suspension dampers, a dual-mode exhaust, a sporty steering wheel and Brembo brakes.

The 2012 Camaro SS, available as a convertible and a coupe, comes with a 6.2 L V8 engine. The coupe has a revised suspension for improved handling. The six-speed manual transmission can get the SS up to 60 mph in 5 seconds. But, even with the automatic option drivers won’t give up too much speed, torque, nor fuel efficiency.

Chevrolet Sonic is Just as Fun as it Sounds

In the world of small cars, the new-for-2012 Chevrolet Sonic is tons of fun to drive, never feeling bland like so many of its competitors. Chevy replaced the outgoing Aveo with its newest subcompact after listening to buyer feedback about which areas needed the greatest improvement. The resulting new Sonic is larger both inside and out, with more power and better fuel efficiency.

The standard engine offers the most horsepower of any car in the class. A 1.8-liter four-cylinder making 138 horsepower returns an EPA-estimated 26 city/35 highway mpg. Upgrading to the advanced new 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder matches the 1.8’s power output while bringing torque to a healthy 148 pound-feet. The smaller, forced-induction engine is also more efficient, with the EPA pegging gas mileage at 29 city/40 highway mpg.

The Sonic shines as far greater than the sum of some numbers on a spec sheet with plenty of passenger space in either the four-door sedan or hatchback body styles. Chevrolet has wisely chosen to offer a high degree of standard feature content missing on some small cars, including ten airbags, stability and traction control systems, anti-lock brakes and OnStar. OnStar services include the ability to have turn-by-turn driving directions sent to the vehicle on demand by a real person.

With the Sonic, Chevy has created a fun competitor perfectly capable of creating a home-away-from-home for the daily commute. A new smartphone pairing infotainment system ensures you’ll always stay connected, and with a name like the Sonic the stereo system has some big expectations to live up to. Fortunately it sounds quite sweet, as does the 1.4 turbo engine.

The Unsolved Mystery of the 2014 Corvette C7

General Motors is prepared to make history when they launch the 2014 C7 Corvette in mid-2013. The C7, whose release is one of the most anticipated of all automobiles in recent years,  is expected to separate itself from the C6 and be the standard for Corvettes in the near future.

GM has been very secretive when discussing the C7, leaving plenty of room for rumors and speculation about the car.

Early rumors in 2011 presumed that the C7 would be equipped with a 5.5 liter engine, but GM has since revealed that the base engine of the car will remain a 6.2 liter engine. General Motors also recently confirmed that the 2014 model will operate with a 7 speed transmission, although they have not yet discussed the car’s heavily rumored dual clutch manual transmission.

Early pictures of the C7 show that the Corvette has less mass than previous models, making it a pound for pound more powerful car. What the pictures do not show however is the rear and interior of the car, both of which are rumored to have undergone major changes and upgrades.

GM may have clued us in on the 6.2 liter base engine and the 7 speed transmission, but most of the details surrounding the C7 still remain a mystery. Until they decide to release more information, we can only speculate about what is to come.

Keep up with all the C7 news with Les Stanford Chevrolet, your Corvette King!
